The Thanksgiving meal is traditionally ended with pumpkin pie. We have started a new tradition with Pumpkin Ice Cream Pie. Our pumpkin ice cream is smooth and creamy with just the right spices. It is the best pumpkin ice cream made by Ashbys. My grandma taught me to cook in her house in Warren, Michigan. That is where I learned the secrets of making homemade goodness. Aside from her pasta sauce, the favorite among us was always her Chicken Soup. Grandmas Chicken Soup was made with the love and care of Grandma. Aside from the basics, chicken, celery, carrots, and onions, she put in a special ingredient that makes it the best chicken soup ever. She always made it with acini de pepe, small round ball pasta. I use acini de pepe also, rotating with thick egg noodles, kluski noodles, angelhair, ditalini, and other pastas. The kids especially love the acini de pepe. Our pasta sauce was first served in my great grandmas restaurant located in Detroit, Michigan back in the 1940’s. After Mazzola’s Restaurant relocated to Tucson, Arizona, my grandma catered her pasta and meatballs to the Ford Plant in Detroit, Michigan. Now the tradition lives on. It can be purchased by the quart to take home. As a rotating variation to soup, we serve pasta with tomato sauce and also rotate alfredo sauce. It is available by the cup, bowl, pint, and quart. It is as authentic as it gets. The sauce is simmered all day to get the best flavor. It is cooked with a special blend of meat to get all of the savory juices. The meat is then taken out to produce a smooth meatless sauce. We also serve the best homemade meatballs offered on our catering menu.

When we relocated in 2007, we add ice cream to the concept. My father in law said we had to serve lemon ice just like the italian bakery that he was friends with for many years. My favorite thing is Lemon Ice. When my mom was in the hospital she would ask for Lemon Ice. My aunt brought her some, and she said this isn’t the real thing. In her memory, everytime I eat it I think of her. I bought a machine to make it myself. Just like Italy the customers say! We squeeze lemons everyday to make it fresh to order. Using the finest Maceri Produce. It is not stored frozen. I also alternate the flavors, raspberry, strawberry, mango, orange, and lime, but the customers always say where is the lemon. Lemon Ice is the best thing for a sore throught. We also serve fresh squeezed Hot Lemonade which is also soothing when your sick and it is also great to drink. So most of the time it is lemon. We also twist it with soft serve to make a gelati twist. Gelati is Italian Ice layer with soft serve, frozen yogurt or frozen custard. It is an original at Soup & Scoop®. All of the offerings at Maceri’s Soup & Scoop have a history. Founded in 1936, the Maceri family has been a staple in the Detroit area’s produce industry located in Detroit’s Eastern Market, Tom Maceri & Son, one of
southeast Michigan’s largest produce distributors, servicing wholesale distributors, retailers, grocery stores, and restaurants throughout Michigan. Anthony, a produce and food industry veteran for more than forty years, learned the ropes from his father, “Detroit’s Produce King” Sam Maceri. Having this experience he certainly know how to pick the best produce. That is a critical job since most of what we do depends on it. Having many years experience in the wholesale and retail food industry, we realized a restaurant that offered homemade soups made with fresh produce received daily directly to the family’s warehouse from local and nationwide farmers would be a hit, and so far it is Anthony services many restaurants, including National Coney Island. Not only is Anthony renowned in the wholesale and retail produce industry, he also has restaurant knowledge. His mother, Josephine Maceri, owned and operated a pizzeria while he was growing up. It was located on Mack Avenue in Grosse Pointe Woods. His mom used to oven bake their subs. This was back in the 1970’s, and that is what we do today upon request with our pitas and subs.
Our subs and pitas originated back in 1984 at our fruit market, Tom Maceri’s Fruit Market, on Detroit’s east side. We have brought the tradition to Shelby Township, Michigan at our restaurant Maceri’s Soup & Scoop, Pitas & Subs.
