Soup’s on with tastes made from scratch. “Homemade soups made from the finest produce bring the best results,” says Lori Maceri, who owns the store along with her husband Anthony, a produce veteran for over 40 years. Anthony learned the ropes from his father, Sam Maceri, known as “King of Freshness.” Having this experience, he certainly knows how to pick the best produce. “That’s a critical job since so much of what we do depends on it,” says Lori.
To go along with the warmth of soup is the comfort of ice cream. At Maceri’s Soup & Scoop® they indulge you by serving up national award winning Ashby’s super premium ice cream. But Lori says that’s part of what makes her restaurant unique.” Who would have thought a soup and ice cream shop would work,” says Lori. “But we’re proof that it does.” Known as the Soup Lady, Lori learned the talent of preparing satisfying meal from her Italian grandma who helped her mother operate the family restaurant.

We had our first snow today here in Michigan. It sure was a soup day. Lots of pots to wash. It was also a hot drink day! Our ice cream flavored hot chocolate and coffee are the best. Anthony started this soup, ”For Real” Vegetable™at Tom Maceri’s Fruit Market, which we owned and operated on Detroit’s east side in the early 1980′s. He created this soup was created in 1984. Having all of the vegetables you can imagine at the families produce warehouse in Detoit’s Eastern Market, it has almost every vegetable you can imagine in it. It can’t get any fresher! It has so many vitamins it sure does help get rid of a cold. I have now perfected this gourmet soup starting with a good vegetable stock we add over 30 different vegetables. Some include sweet peas, pea pods, asparagus, brussel sprouts, flat parsley, red potatoes, sweet potatoes, idaho potatoes, red onion, green onion, leeks, broccoli, cauliflower, spanish onion, turnip, parsnips, carrot, tomatoes, corn, celery, wax beans, green beans, pole beans, cabbage, zucchini, yellow squash, mushrooms, garlic, escarole, green pepper, and red pepper. This soup takes about 4 hours just to cut the vegetables. Sometimes a couple of the vegetables may differ and a few secrets are left out. Just because its not listed it might be in there. Having a 40 year history in the foodservice industry, it is no surprise that Maceri’s developed this concept in 2004. Who would have thought that soup and ice cream including pitas and subs would work, but we’re proof that it does! Having the soup company was the first thought. Now serving from a list of over 150 varieties of homemade from scratch soup. Next was to add ice cream to our pita and sub line. Being in the produce business gives us the advantage of having the freshest produce available. It can’t get any fresher. We have created our sub line that originated in 1984 at our fruit market. We could not make them fast enough. Having pita bread available which came in fresh daily, we added pita sandwiches to our sub line. Adding to the concept, Michigan’s Favorite, National Award Winning Asbhy’s Sterling Super Premium Ice Cream. Ashby’s Ice Cream was founded in 1984. As far back as I can remember, at the age of 6, I was baking. My grandma would make me roll the dough for her italian cookies. During the holidays she would get the dough ready during the day, and after school I would bake them. When I had nothing to do I would create and bake. Since then, I have dessert catered my cookies along with other finger desserts. Some of the favorite cookies include Italian cookies, chocolate chip, snickerdoodles, white chocolate raspberry, kiss cookies, and many more. During the holidays at Maceri’s Soup & Scoop you can get Italian cookies, chocolate chip, pumpkin chocolate chip, egg nog, chocolate mint, and white chocolate cranberry.
