Maceri’s started creating Soup & Subs back in 1984 at their Fruit Market on Detroit’s eastside known as Tom Maceri’s Fruit Market. Their Subs by the Foot have been a long time favorite. Anthony made his famous Italian Sub  sold in the deli department. It was called a Fatso Sub. It was 4 inches long and 4 inches high loaded with quality meat and cheese.  The Soups made from scratch were made with the finest Maceri Produce. Some of the favorites were “For Real” Vegetable made with 30 types of vegetables, Stracciatella, Chicken Pastina, and Minestrone. The soup list has grown to 150+ varieties made from scratch, today found at Maceri’s Soup & Scoop, Pitas & Subs.

Ashby’s Sterling Ice Cream was also developed in 1984. They created an ice cream that tastes as good as it looks. Loaded with premium add in’s, there is no need to add mix ins.  It is all of the flavor without the added cost. This old-time favorite is served up in Shelby Twp., Mi. Despite its name, the egg cream contains neither eggs nor cream. The basic ingredients are milk, seltzer, and chocolate syrup. These were sold in New York. The Detroit Egg Cream is made with Vernors, chocolate syrup and milk. My husbands 90yr old uncle used to work for Vernors and would bring this home in quarts. He said it was called a Vernors Cream Ale. It was a special treat.  An egg cream will lose its head and become flat if it is not enjoyed right away.

For many years, the egg cream remained a product sold only in ice cream parlors because bottled versions were impossible to make. The cream, chocolate, and soda had a tendency to separate and loose its fizz.
