Maceri’s, Homemade Goodness with Italian Fare

Italian fare can alway be found at Maceri’s. Both my husband and I are from Italian heritage. My husband, a foodservice distributor, grew up in the back of the house of his mother’s pizza shop. My grandma had a restaurant also in Detroit. She made alot of Italian fare including her Italian pasta sauce, lasagna, chili, chicken dishes, cakes, and pies. “You never know what people want to eat,” she would say. One day she would make chili and they wanted something else. Customers would ask her to make something specific for them. They would say, “Mrs. Mazzola, could you make me a chocolate cake?’ and she would make them one. My grandma Pauline catered to the Ford company downtown Detroit her pasta and meatballs. They loved them. They would go no where else.

The Soup Lady Originates in Michigan at Maceri’s

It’s official. The nations Soup Lady® is Michigan based. There is a soup man and now there is a Soup Lady®. As soup season approaches, you will find the widest variety of homemade soups and Maceri’s Pasta Sauce at Maceri’s Soup & Scoop®. We will always have soup for you.

Growing up living with her Grandma gave her the aspiration and knowledge to make that dream a reality. Lori’s great grandma, Angelina, had a restaurant in Detroit in the 1940’s; she wanted to create something that brought those times back.” She started making soups at Tom Maceri’s Fruit Market on Detroit’s eastside back in 1984. That is also where their subs were first created including “For Real Vegetable” which has over 30 vegetables in it. Italian flare is also among the soup rotation including Maceri’s Pasta Sauces, Angelina’s Minestrone®, Stracciatella, & Pasta Fagioli.

Famous among friends and family for her soups and pasta sauces, serving from a list of over 150 varieties, Lori says she wanted to bring that homemade touch to the business and provide a different option for Metro Detroit in a comfortable restaurant setting with reasonable value and pricing. All of the soups are the same price. From Seafood Bisque to Chicken Noodle, it is what you would expect to pay for soup.

Italian Kitchens in the Basement

Most Italians had kitchens in the basement. Growing up living with my grandma, we had one. The upstairs kitchen was for company. We ate all our meals downstairs. It was for cooking too. My grandma’s mother had a restaurant in Detroit. She would teach me everything about it. Her daily cooking and baking was done in the basement. If we were having company we would eat upstairs.

Thanksgiving meals were cooked and ate in the basement. There was more room there. She would start cooking 3 days before. Every year she would tell me the stories of how she cooked for 50 people on an apartment size stove. These stoves only had two burners. The oven was only that wide also. I started cooking at the age of six. We would make the old school Italian cookies. When I was 18, and going to get married, she made me copy all of her recipies in a spiral notebook. She then taught me her pasta sauce. It was from the restaurant secrets. All of my life that is what we did and talked about. Two days before she passed away we were talking on the phone. I asked gram, “Should I have a restaurant or cater?” She said, “I would cater, that way you would know exactly what they want.” Listening to the restaurant stories all my life, I decided to do both. That night she also told me of the secret of how she changed the Italian cookie recipie. Since my mother never wanted to learn, she had me to keep on the legacy. I cook from family traditions and restaurant secrets. We cater, serve in the soup rotation, or you can purchase Maceri’s Pasta Sauce® by the quart. Of course there is a secret in that too. Grandma always said, “Don’t tell everyone everything you know.”

Angelina’s Tradition Lives On in Michigan Italian Restaurant

Family tradition lives on with soup in Shelby Township eatery.

Maceri’s Soup & Scoop, Pitas and Subs began creating their soups and subs in 1984 at Tom Maceri’s Fruit Market which was owned and operated by Anthony and Lori Maceri on Detroit’s eastside. Lori discovered the secrets to preparing satisfying meals from her grandma Pauline Brunetti, and great grandmother, Angelina Mazzola. Mazzola’s Restaurant was located in downtown Detroit, relocating to Tucson, Arizona around 1945. Her daughter Pauline helped her run it by spending the summers there. Growing up living with Pauline, Lori learned the secrets of family traditions made from scratch and the restaurant secrets from Angelina which is what they do at Maceri’s Soup & Scoop, Pitas & Subs for their extended customer family. Angelina’s Minestrone® is a savory Italian tradition frequently served. Not just soup, serving homemade Maceri’s Pasta Sauce® and Alfredo Sauce, which is Grandma Angelina’s from her restaurant, as a rotating choice or you can order trays from the catering menu.

Lori has now created over 200 varieties of soup with a majority based on Italian custom. They have received awards for Best Soup Company of Detroit 3 years in a row. Having over 65 years combined experience in the wholesale and retail foodservice industry; they realized the demand for really good soup and the qualities it brings out— comfort, warmth, and well being.

Maceri’s Pasta Sauce® is founded on Italian tradition. Grandma Angelina had an Italian restaurant where her sauce was famous. Growing up living with my grandma, cooking and baking was instilled in me. I can remember back to the age of 6 rolling out the Italian cookie dough. Everyday was a lesson on cooking. Getting married at the age of 18, grandma made sure I knew the secret of her pasta sauce. Over the years friends and family have mentioned that I should jar it. Well, that is in the plan, but for now we serve it in our soup rotation as a side and can be taken home by the quart. It is also available for catering along with our famous meatballs, breaded chicken with homemade ammoglio, Italian sausage, roast beef, salads, pitas, subs, and over 150 varieties of homemade soups.

Italian Soda Served in Michigan Ice Cream Parlor

An Italian soda is a refreshing combination of flavored syrup and club soda or seltzer water mixed in a cup of ice. The addition of half-and-half or milk turns an Italian soda into a creamosa or French soda. It can also be made into an Italian Soda Float served with Premium Ashby’s Vanilla, French Vanilla, or Vanilla Bean Ice Cream.

Surprisingly, the Italian soda recipe we know today did not originate in Italy. Some sources credit an immigrant Italian family living in San Francisco during the 1920s with concocting the familiar syrup and sparkling water beverage. Using imported coffee flavorings from Italy, the family would mix up their Italian soda recipe in the back room of their grocery store. The drink soon became popular as an alternative to flavored coffees or espresso.

The key to a good Italian soda is quality syrup. Companies originally offered flavored syrups designed specifically for coffee; hazelnut, vanilla, caramel and amaretto, for example. With the Italian soda’s rise in popularity, many companies began producing flavors inspired by fruit, cola and liqueur extracts.

Here it is the middle of winter, damp and cold, and lemons can give you a little bit of sunshine. Lemon is the perfect remedy to winter heaviness. During this season of colds and flu, you will appreciate the hefty dose of vitamin C that it delivers. Chills, fevers, and sore throats may be due to a variety of causes, never the less the lemon is always a helpful remedy. Here is a method that works well. The juice of one lemon is to be added to a cup of hot water with honey. My grandma Pauline used to give it to me when I was sick. It alway made me feel better. She called it hot lemonade.
