Growing up living with her Grandma gave her the aspiration and knowledge to make that dream a reality. Lori’s great grandma, Angelina, had a restaurant in Detroit in the 1940’s; she wanted to create something that brought those times back.” She started making soups at Tom Maceri’s Fruit Market on Detroit’s eastside back in 1984. That is also where their subs were first created including “For Real Vegetable” which has over 30 vegetables in it. Italian flare is also among the soup rotation including Maceri’s Pasta Sauces, Angelina’s Minestrone®, Stracciatella, & Pasta Fagioli.
Famous among friends and family for her soups and pasta sauces, serving from a list of over 150 varieties, Lori says she wanted to bring that homemade touch to the business and provide a different option for Metro Detroit in a comfortable restaurant setting with reasonable value and pricing. All of the soups are the same price. From Seafood Bisque to Chicken Noodle, it is what you would expect to pay for soup.

Most Italians had kitchens in the basement. Growing up living with my grandma, we had one. The upstairs kitchen was for company. We ate all our meals downstairs. It was for cooking too. My grandma’s mother had a restaurant in Detroit. She would teach me everything about it. Her daily cooking and baking was done in the basement. If we were having company we would eat upstairs.
Thanksgiving meals were cooked and ate in the basement. There was more room there. She would start cooking 3 days before. Every year she would tell me the stories of how she cooked for 50 people on an apartment size stove. These stoves only had two burners. The oven was only that wide also. I started cooking at the age of six. We would make the old school Italian cookies. When I was 18, and going to get married, she made me copy all of her recipies in a spiral notebook. She then taught me her pasta sauce. It was from the restaurant secrets. All of my life that is what we did and talked about. Two days before she passed away we were talking on the phone. I asked gram, “Should I have a restaurant or cater?” She said, “I would cater, that way you would know exactly what they want.” Listening to the restaurant stories all my life, I decided to do both. That night she also told me of the secret of how she changed the Italian cookie recipie. Since my mother never wanted to learn, she had me to keep on the legacy. I cook from family traditions and restaurant secrets. We cater, serve in the soup rotation, or you can purchase Maceri’s Pasta Sauce® by the quart. Of course there is a secret in that too. Grandma always said, “Don’t tell everyone everything you know.”
