My Grandma was my biggest inspiration. Growing up living with my grandma, gave me the inspiration and the knowledge to further what has been instilled in me all of my life.
I think about my grandma everyday making soup and baking cakes. The pain of losing my mom, dad, grandpa, grandma, and great grandma in 5 years time was so terrific, but while cooking I would not have to think about anything else except the meals I am preparing. There is a healing that takes place in the kitchen. I have created a restaurant of comfort foods. When the going gets tough, as the trials of life, we can pick our self up with the comfort of family traditions.
The night before my grandma passed away we talked for hours until after midnight. We always talked about recipies, secrets, and cooking. She catered, made wedding and shower cakes, and helped my great grandma in her restaurant. She always shared stories. I asked her if I should cater or have a restaurant, as I had done most of my life. She said you could do both. I am doing that now. With everything I make she is with me. She would have loved to see it, and probably work there too. Creating a restaurant with items made from family traditions, including their restaurant recipes with the quality that they bring out-comfort, love, and well-being has been a life long dream. Italian fare can alway be found at Maceri’s. Both my husband and I are from Italian heritage. My husband, a foodservice distributor, grew up in the back of the house of his mother’s pizza shop. My grandma had a restaurant also in Detroit. She made alot of Italian fare including her Italian pasta sauce, lasagna, chili, chicken dishes, cakes, and pies. “You never know what people want to eat,” she would say. One day she would make chili and they wanted something else. Customers would ask her to make something specific for them. They would say, “Mrs. Mazzola, could you make me a chocolate cake?’ and she would make them one. My grandma Pauline catered to the Ford company downtown Detroit her pasta and meatballs. They loved them. They would go no where else.

Growing up living with my Grandma gave me the desire to help my elders. She would take care of aunts, family, and friends by bringing them lunch, dinner, or special treats. She would take them to doctor appointments, help with laundry, clean their house, or whatever their needs were. She would make friends with everyone, and in turn when she needed help they would help her. We can help if you cannot get out by bringing you breakfast, lunch, or dinner. If you need, we can stop at the store and pick up something for you. Some of our customers want us to stay and chat and have tea. I love meeting people.
